A cocktail dress or cocktail gown is a woman's dress worn at cocktail parties and semi-formal or "black tie" occasions.
Historically the length of a cocktail dress is long, often touching the ankle. When it is about 5 cm (2 inches) above the ankle it is called tea length and when it is almost touching the ankle it is called ballerina length, although ballerina length dresses usually fall into the evening gown category.
The modern definition of a cocktail dress is commonly taken to mean a shorter dress around knee length. It must be smart, such as the little black dress, and may have sequins or lace as a feature.
At semi-formal occasions, a less elaborate, shorter-length cocktail dress may be worn. Prior to the mid 20th century this type of dress was known as 'late afternoon'. When gentlemen are in business suits, ladies also wear dress suits or "good" afternoon skirt and dresses.
In the mid-20th century, some couturiers began describing full-skirted cocktail gowns as "dancing costumes". These are suitable for formal dances but not for balls, or other white tie affairs, where ball gowns are worn.
Christian Dior was the first to use the term "cocktail dress" to refer to early evening wear, in the late 1940s.
Cocktail dresses of the year 2013 are considered semi-formal ones that fit afternoon and night cocktail parties. These dresses are available in different lengths; some are above the knee while others are mid length and long ones. That is to say, cocktail dresses, which are above the knee, are called tea length, while those touching the ankle are called ballerina length dresses. It is recommended that in afternoon cocktail parties, short or tea length dresses are more preferable, while long or ballerina ones fit night parties. The Great Depression:

Those who could though, would buy the coveted Little Black Dress or LBD. That’s right, the silver lining of the Great Depression was the popularization of the little black dress. Chanel was the instigator of the dress, releasing her LBD prior to the crash. It became a staple item for women in the 1930’s since this unembellished, simple dress perfectly complemented the struggles of the time.
1940-50’s:
After the Second World War, a new age of consumer cocktails began. Christian Dior coined the term ‘cocktail’ to describe his evening dress, and from here, designers followed his legacy. Dior dominated the cocktail fashion industry, introducing his famous cinched-waist, full-skirt look. This was dubbed the ‘new look’ silhouette, which even extended to everyday wear for women.
Consumerism has played a major part in popularizing cocktail attire for women. It generated a wave of cocktail-specific accessories and styles, making them affordable to the mass public. Cocktail culture successfully permeated itself into the North American consciousness.
Present Day:
It’s difficult to express the style of cocktail dress in today’s time. In a post-modern society, the cocktail dress is an eclectic collection of various styles that change quickly, season to season. Gone are the days when cocktail attire was simply meant for cocktail hour!
