Sequins are disk-shaped beads used for decorative purposes. In earlier centuries, they were made from shiny metals. Today, sequins are most often made from plastic. They are available in a wide variety of colors and geometrical shapes. Sequins are commonly used on clothing, jewelry, bags, shoes and many other accessories.

Sequins are sometimes also referred to as spangles, paillettes, or diamantes. Paillettes themselves are commonly very large and flat. Sequins may be stitched flat to the fabric, so that they do not move, and are less likely to fall off; or they may be stitched at only one point, so that they dangle and move easily, to catch more light. Some sequins are made with multiple facets, to increase their reflective ability.

History:
Evidence exists that gold sequins were being used as decoration on clothing or paraphernalia in the Indus Valley as early as 2500BC, during the Kot Diji phase.

The word "sequin" is from a rendition into French of the Italian word zecchino, which was a gold coin that was issued in the late medieval and early post-medieval centuries in Republic of Venice and also issued in Ottoman Turkey; see Sequin (coin). By the early 19th century the sequin coins were no longer being issued, and the name sequin was falling out of use in its original sense. It was then that the name was taken up in France to designate what it means today. The 19th century sequins were made of shiny metal.

Large sequins, fastened only at the top, have been used on billboards and other signage, particularly prior to the development of lighted and neon signs.

The holiday season and the New Year are upon us, and one style detail you are sure to see adorning dresses, jackets, and purses is sequins.

Sequins are one of the few fashion elements that hasn’t gone out of style. In fact, did you know that sequins have been around for centuries?

“Sequins” as we usually think of them are made of shiny plastic, but they were originally made of coins and date back to Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece. They would drill tiny holes into the coins and attach them to clothing.

Archaeologists have found mummified pharaohs wrapped in sequined cloth.

The etymology of the word “sequin” can be traced to the Arabic word “sikka” which meant coin. “sikkas” were used to decorate clothing throughout the Middle East and Mediterranean for centuries.

In thirteenth century Venice, Italy, people produced coins called “zecchinos” to embellish clothing and the French adapted the word to “sequin,” the word we use in English as well.

Sequins first came over to Europe with gypsies who often wore coins sewn onto their clothing.

The purpose of using “sikkas” and “zecchinos” to adorn clothing was to demonstrate wealth and power.

Obviously if you could afford to sew money onto your clothing, you must have been pretty wealthy. In other cultures, the shiny metal discs were used to ward off and distract evil spirits.

Today some people still use fake coins made out of metal to decorate costumes, such as the outfits that belly dancers wear. More common, though, are the shiny, multi-colored plastic pieces that are usually sewn on by machines, and are for people of all ages and can be found in all price ranges.

If you go in to a department store in almost any place in the world, at this time of year, you can be sure to find fashionable, sequined dresses, skirts, purses, and even shoes ready to be worn to celebrate the New Year.
